I don't have a problem with this. It might be good to go through life without structure. Without it. People lash out aggressively but eventually they fall into another.

Gerz’s mature work can be seen as a long-term effort to restore a shared practice of dispute to the public monument. His projects use written language not because of its assumed anti-aesthetic properties as in conceptual art, but because of its extra-aesthetic appeal as a shared medium of communication.

Work in public space

(with students from the University of California at Davis: Wendy Chisholm, Adam Contreras, David Fletcher, D. Jones, Alfred Lewis, Jonathan Mitchell, Tara Mulligan, Irene Pollock, Fred Van Dyck, Colin Walsh und Emily Wittmann)

29 brass plaques, each 4.5 x 8.5 cm

Brass plaques placed at various locations around the campus show answers to the unpublicized question "What would you do if you were told to give up your religion?"

The work is an extension of the photo piece entitled The Answer (431), which was also done in cooperation with the students from the University of California. The students take up the artist’s concept and pose the question asked to them by Jochen Gerz for The Answer to others.
