The Answer Jochen Gerz Cr 431 Web

THERE HAS TO BE THINGS THAT ARE PRIVATE. REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT IS TO YOU, IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING BESIDES YOURSELF. EVEN IF YOU SAY NO. IT’S THE CAUSE OF THE BIGGEST CONFLICTS ON THIS PLANET.

He … gets so relentlessly serious you finally think he's kidding and vice versa. ... Gerz leaves the choice of treating his pieces as parlor-game puzzles with specific solutions or as philosophical deliberations.

William Wilson 1995

Why has wondering become an essentially private affair?

Lawrence Rinder 1999

Catherine Millet 2004

Gerz’s mature work can be seen as a long-term effort to restore a shared practice of dispute to the public monument. His projects use written language not because of its assumed anti-aesthetic properties as in conceptual art, but because of its extra-aesthetic appeal as a shared medium of communication.
