Die Reise würde auch nichts

… Nowhere else in a work complex in contemporary art are epistemological doubts as to the sole power of an image or a text to lend meaning reflected as clearly as in Jochen Gerz’s works. His installations illustrate to what extent images take on fields of meaning first and foremost through texts, and sentences derive their abundance of associations from images while at the same time constantly changing and being put into perspective. These works teach us that an image does not necessarily forfeit its autonomy by virtue of an accompanying text, just as a text in the context of an image does not merely serve the function of commentary. As they interfere with each other, text and image constitute a new unity, which only in this way, in this specific constellation, produces new meaning.

In den Arbeiten Jochen Gerz’ schlägt sich, wie sonst nirgendwo in einem Werkkomplex zeitgenössischer Kunst, erkenntnistheoretischer Zweifel an der jeweils allein sinnstiftenden Kraft von Bild oder Text nieder. Seine Installationen machen deutlich, wie sehr Bilder ihre Sinnfelder durch Texte und Sätze ihren Assoziationsreichtum durch Bilder zuallererst erhalten und zugleich fortwährend wechseln und relativieren. Ein Bild, so lehren diese Arbeiten, verliert seine Autonomie nicht zwangsläufig durch einen beigefügten Text, ebenso wie ein Text im Zusammenhang eines Bildes nicht allein Kommentarfunktion erfüllt. Text und Bild konstituieren, miteinander interferierend, eine neue Einheit, die erst so, in diesem spezifischen Zusammenwirken neuen Sinn stiftet.
