Contrary to makers of laws or makers of shoes, who undoubtedly also deal with images, the artist's occupation (profession or vocation) is to be a maker of images. Although one who makes shoes is rarely thought of as the author of his or her product, it somehow goes without saying that the artist is ineluctably the author of the image. … An image is a visual representation. It is used to represent culture. And culture, in order to be present and visible, needs to be represented by and in images. Made and signed by the artist, these images belong to and make up (art) history.
