What helps the knowledge advancing to the truth: the portrait or the physical presence of the portrayed? … It is evident that the sign is just a part of reality. Gerz however also proves that the reality of the physical Gerz with all his contingencies is a part of the fixated sign. To be complete, reality needs the picture, which the artist does not anymore make of it - as it was said in the past - but which he takes off it. Both refer to each other and thereby bring to mind their duality.

Georges Schlocker 1974. Translated by e_CR editors

Georges Schlocker 1974

His entrapment in a desperate situation often leads to brutal reactions: He destroys his tools, his media, with the same pent-up hate and the same impatience as a child smashes and massacres his toys if they don’t do as he wishes.

Margarethe Jochimsen 1975. Translated by e_CR editors
