La dispersion des semences, la récolte des cendres
The Spreading of the Seeds, the Gathering of the Ashes
Die Verteilung der Saat, die Kollekte der Asche
Jochen Gerz and Esther Shalev-Gerz
CR 118. Year 1995
Those of us who have seen, if you can speak of seeing the Monument against Fascism in Hamburg and the Monument against Racism in Saarbruck, know that these, by now almost invisible artworks, only serve the purpose of making us witnesses of ourselves, of our collective history and our responsibility for it and the future. The Dispersal of Seeds – The Collection of Ashes continues not only the tradition of these two radical monuments, but furthermore of the critique of the monument itself. Also, this is an artwork in hiding, refusing monumentality and the derisory manifestations of the might of the powerful.
