The fetish as well as the dance around it is a fictitious event on the stage of human psychology. Or more precisely: on the Id- level, below one’s level of consciousness (“underneath the domain, in the forest”). What people cannot bear, what scares them witless and what they subject to a fetishistic ritual is not the dead gaze of the lens but their own one. In order to get the people back into the field of vision or interaction it would be necessary to free oneself of the fetish of photography even if its purpose were only its own critique. Gerz’ photo/texts and all their various interpretations would of course have revealed themselves as a dance around the evil eye.

Sowohl der Fetisch, wie der Tanz drumherum ist eine fiktive Veranstaltung auf der Bühne der menschlichen Psychologie, genauer: auf der Ebene des Es, unterhalb der Bewußtseinsgrenze ("unterhalb der Domäne, im Wald"). Was die Menschen nicht ertragen können, wovor sie sich zu Tode erschrecken und was sie zum Gegenstand eines fetischistischen Rituals machen - das ist nicht der tote Blick des Objektivs, sondern ihr eigener Blick. Um die Menschen zurück ins Blick - bzw. Interaktionsfeld zu bekommen, wäre es nötig, sich vom Fetisch Fotografie loszumachen, bestünde der Dienst am Fetisch auch nur in der Kritik an ihm. Womit freilich die Gerzschen Foto/Texte samt ihren möglichen Lesearten sich selbst als Tanz ums böse Auge entlarvt hätten.
