Dans le processus du souvenir, l’image “indicielle” du réel devient une image du possible, en conséquence de quoi les phrases qui accompagnent la photo sont souvent formulées au conditionnel. Gerz fait passer la photographie d’une forme de présence à une forme d’absence. Ce qu’il cherche à évoquer, c’est l’"entre-deux”, cet espace entre l’image et le mot, cette faille où l’imagination, ce que l’écriture ne peut exprimer et ce que la photo ne peut reproduire trouvent leur place.
