Jochen Gerz is not a video artist. For him, video as a medium is, first and foremost, the tool that best allows him to lay down the conditions of his artistic production in a (post) industrial society. Since the video was not invented for art, it has become accessible as a tool - in the same way as photography or writing - to be used by the artist as well as the public, with both becoming the consumers of the same industrial product… This approach which consists in reprocessing different media, is to be understood in a framework of sociocultural use, and so it amounts to a specific approach, which is not aimed directly at art, but at the different ways in which art is appropriated.

Schließlich sind zahlreiche Performances mit den Einsatz von Videotechnik verbunden. Diese Performances haben einen deutlichen Aufführungscharakter vor einem vom Aktionsraum abgesonderten Publikum. In ihnen führt Gerz vor, wie die Performance Modellcharakter für kulturelle Prozesse gewinnen kann. Zwar wurde Gerz immer wieder mit dem in den 70er Jahren weit verbreiteten Trend zu "individuellen Mythologien" in Verbindung gebracht, doch zeigen gerade die Performances, die den Einsatz von Video aufweisen, dass Gerz, so sehr ihm die Anbindung der Kunst an das Leben am Herzen liegt, sich darüber im klaren ist, dass die Performance sich stets in einem ästhetischen Rahmen bewegt, der die existentielle Dimension lediglich thematisieren, niche aber in kulturelle Praxis umsetzen kann.
