Modesty. Is the question on art’s future modest?... Art. Is the question on art really the question about the future of the social, the political, the economical? In whichever form people live their lives, are they able to do it without art? That is the core of the question. Or more precisely: Is art conceivable again as something other than a special form of monetary transactions? Love. Gerz does not only ask about the future… Gerz brings the people into position: Know your life! It is short, art is eternal. Yet another mockery. One has to reverse the sentence to make it right. Bescheidenheit. Ist die Frage nach der Zukunft der Kunst bescheiden? … Kunst. Ist die Frage nach der Kunst wirklich die nach der Zukunft des Sozialen, Politischen, Ökonomischen? Gleich, in welcher Form die Menschen ihr Leben leben werden, können sie es… ohne die Kunst? Das ist der Kern der Frage. Oder genauer: Ist Kunst wieder anders denkbar, denn als Sonderform des Geldverkehrs? Liebe. Gerz fragt nicht nur nach der Zukunft. … Gerz bringt die Leute in Stellung: Erkenne dein Leben! Es ist kurz, die Kunst ist ewig. Noch so ein Hohn. Man muss den Satz umkehren damit er stimmt. Ars brevis, vita longa.

A central aspect of the Anthology of Art is its ability to subvert its own system. It can hence be seen as the new kind of media criticism, that has characterised Gerz’ work since the 1960s. In its process of only showing twelve entries of one generation at a time and deleting the preceding ones, the work yet again proves to be a utilization of media against itself.

Ein wesentlicher Aspekt der "Anthologie der Kunst" besteht in ihrer Fähigkeit, das eigene System zu unterlaufen. Sie kann damit als neue Form der Medienkritik betrachet werden, die das Gerzsche Werk seit den sechziger Jahren auszeichnet. Im Ablauf der jeweils zwölf Beiträge einer Generation, der die vorhergeganenen auslöscht, erweist sich die Arbeit erneut als eine Verwendung der Medien gegen ihren eigentlichen Gebrauch.
